How secure are they?

When your data is backed up to us it is done via a Secure Socket Layer connection. This makes it as secure as any other encrypted Internet transaction (typically denoted by the icon). All data is fully encrypted before it starts its’ journey to the BackupsAnywhere servers using one of the follow algorithms:

  • Twofish — a license free award winning encryption technique
  • Triple DES (3DES) — An encryption technique used in many computer products, e.g. routers/firewalls
  • Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) — A US government certified encryption standard — advised and is the default used by BackupsAnywhere

If you wish to swap to one of the non-default encryption algorithms refer to the user guide.

All data is 128bit encrypted when stored on the server. The key is normally based on your password (although this can be altered). This means that you must know the password in order to successfully restore and unencrypt your data. This makes it VERY IMPORTANT that you do not lose your password. Not even BackupsAnywhere can access your data without your key.

Each user can restrict online access to their files so that only those IP addresses set by you are able to restore data.
