Offsite (Remote) Backups
Up to now if you have taken backups you will probably have used a backup tape drive or simply burned your backups to CD or DVD. All of these methods require you to:
- Buy tapes, CDs, DVDs to use as backup media
- Remember to load the tape, CD, or DVD every day/week and run the backup
- Take the tape, CD, or DVD somewhere else to make sure its not stored near your computer
- Bring the tape, CD, or DVD back to the office at just the right time to use for the next backup
In addition, especially with tapes, you need to make sure that you don't keep using the same media year after year. Tapes need replacing after a certain amount of use (12 to 24 months generally).
Offsite backups free you from all of this. They are convenient, flexible, and require no regular attention. There are many advantages:
- They are performed directly from your computer system across the Internet
- They are held at a location far from your office/home
- They are scheduled to run regularly and simply require your computer to be powered on at a time you would like them to run
- They will e-mail you with either:
- Confirmation of success
- Notification of failure
- Notification of a missed backup
- They are sent securely between your computer and the remote backup server
- They are stored securely so that only you have access to them
- If you need to restore data you can do this anywhere using a simple web interface
- Offsite backups can actually work out cheaper than tape backups
