When will my backups run?

Scheduling

Using the built-in scheduler you can run your backups at any time with the following options:

  • Daily — At any specific hour and minute of the day — (more than once a day if you prefer)
  • Weekly — On any combination of days during the week at any time on those days.
  • Monthly — On any specific day of the month, a specific offset during the month (e.g. First Monday in the month).
  • Custom — On any specific day of the year at a specified time.

You can add multiple schedules for the same backup allowing you to schedule different daily, weekly, and monthly backups for different sets of files.

The scheduler allows you the flexibility to stop the backup if it runs for too long. This would allow you to run a backup starting at 01:00am but stop it 7 hours later if it were still running. Backups can be interrupted and restarted without the need to run again from the beginning.

Retention

You can specify a retention period for your backups. You can stipulate a different retention period for backups run on different days. For example you can request the following:

  • Daily — Run Monday to Saturday - Keep 6 copies.
  • Weekly — Run every Sunday - Keep 4 copies.
  • Monthly — Run last Sunday in the month - Keep 12 copies.

This is often known as a GFS (Grandfather, Father, Son) backup strategy and is considered to be optimal for highly critical data. For example, any accounting files that need to be kept for a legislative period of 7 years. You could even specify that 7 yearly backups be kept.
